Marie Curie discovered that radioactivity is intrinsic property of the atom, and does not depend on the temperature pressure etc. which meant that the atom was disintegrating on its own without any stimulus to emit the radiations. This proved that the atom was made of smaller particles and not indestructible as earlier thought of. This propelled science to look deeper into the atoms and the rest is history, discovery of not only electrons, protons and neutrons, but a zoo of sub-atomic particles that make up these three building blocks. Farther down the rabbit hole scientists went, they discovered more and more, until it is now known that nothing is essentially material in this world but just waves of energy.
